A great American once said, “THERE ARE OBVIOUSLY TWO EDUCATIONS: ONE SHOULD TEACH US HOW TO MAKE A LIVING AND OTHER HOW TO LIVE”.
In our Pakistan, we are taught how to live before. we know how to make living. we receive liberal education which broadens our outlooks and refines our desires and sensibilities. we don’t receive any technical education. As a result of it, there is great misery and distress among the educated men in the country. As the greatest educationist, Sir White Head had remarked: “ THE TRUE ORDER OF LEARNING SHOULD BE FIRST, WHAT IS NECESSARY, SECOND WHAT IS USEFUL, THIRD WHAT IS ORNAMENTAL. TO RESERVE THIS ARRANGEMENT, IS LIKE BEGINNING TO BUILD AT THE TOP OF THIS ADEFICE”
Technical education is “what is useful”? It differs from liberal education in being the direction to training in some special branch of industry. it is teaching of a trade or a handicraft. This is the age of machinery. Technical training cannot be received from books and lectures only. The introduction of technical education in the schools of London towards the end of the last century uplifted the image of the dignity of labor in the eyes of children.
Technical education is very important for the prosperity and advancement of the country. it makes an end of poverty and unemployment among the educated youth. Every industry needs a large number of skilled workers and technicians. we are rich in raw resources, we can exploit them if we prepare an adequate number of mechanics, skilled workers, and technicians.
This education is a valuable means of training pupils manually. It has another great thing, has exploded the myth that only liberal or intellectual education is worthwhile. But now a man who has been trained in any department occupies an honorable place in society.
Purely technical education has no defeats. One of the defeats is that it narrows our outlook. It makes us unkind. It makes our introvert.
